Flooding in urban environments is not a speculative hazard but something we can quantify. In the case of Madrid, the intersection of pretty mountainous terrain (it might surprise you there are 2000m difference between the highest spot in Madrid province, Pico Peñalara -2428m- and the Alberche river environment in some areas -430m-) and urban expansion presents a scenario of significant risk, particularly when analyzed through the lens of shared high-resolution geospatial data. This study integrates the buildings from BTN (Base Topográfica Nacional) provided by the Spanish “IGN”, the CNIG with the official flood hazard maps for a 100-year return period (T=100), published by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO). The T=100 scenario is the most representative for evaluating long-term flood exposure, as it reflects events with a 1% annual probability—rare but not improbable, and certainly not negligible.

En este tutorial se explica cómo crear un efecto visual dinámico en QGIS que simula una «araña» (ragnetto) que conecta automáticamente los 8 puntos más cercanos al cursor del mouse. In August 2014, I laced up my running shoes for the first time, with no grand expectations — just a simple desire to move, to feel better, to take control. I was far from athletic: weighing nearly 80 kilograms (almost 20 kg more than today), with no endurance, no rhythm, and definitely no running background (exception made of some runs in my mid 20’s :-)). But I made myself a promise: I would be stubborn, consistent, and patient. No matter the weather — rain, wind, snow, scorching heat, storms — I would run, three times a week, every week.

Ayer tuve el honor de compartir una hora y media con la clase de 2ºA de primaria del Colegio Ermita del Santo en Madrid, hablando sobre Geografía desde muchos puntos de vista. Desde las proyecciones cartográficas hasta Google Earth, pasando por un proyecto cartográfico real y reciente, y terminando con la relación entre la Geografía y la Meteorología. Pero lo más especial no fueron los mapas ni las explicaciones… ¡fueron las preguntas!

Se completa la trilogía escolar en GEOGRAFÍA
Después de mi master class en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) y después de mi clase de motivación en el Instituto IES Santo Tomás de Aquino de Íscar (Valladolid), llegó mi clase en el Colegio Ermita del Santo en Madrid. Tres niveles educativos diferentes y cada una interesante a su manera. En este último caso del Colegio, me tuve que enfrentar a casi una cincuentena de niños de 4º de Primaria donde disfruté tanto que no sé quién se lo pasó mejor, si ellos o yo!.

Esta vez me tocó impartir el seminario motivacional “Geógrafos en tiempos de GIS” en el entorno del Máster de Tecnologías de la Información Geográfica. Yo encantado pues este mismo máster lo cursó yo hace ya doce años (wow, time flies, el tiempo pasa rápidamente cómo dicen!) y la verdad es que me encantó hacerlo.

La idea era mostrar el día a día del trabajo de un Geógrafo cualquiera (yo) y el recorrido que me ha llevado hasta aquí. El porqué de la elección de la carrera, los diferentes trabajos, las influencias de otros trabajos a priori sin conexión, el día a día actual, etc.
