Solar + Shadows analysis on Rue Massillon, Nantes (France)


This is the beautiful building in from of my house in Nantes… Let’s model it first using Sketchup. Also i have used a non standard style only for visualization purposes…


If we have the North behind us this means we are going to have a lot of light… but so far we are just guessing…


Now we know if for sure. Take a look at the results by M. Capeluto’s Solar Analysis.


If we face South we notice there’s a lot of sun in the other side of the building (every line is a summarized path during a month, being the higher the closer to the summer solstice)

Shadow analysis en Puerta de Arganda, Madrid.


Hoy publico en español puesto que los datos son en español y yo soy español:-) but if you guys have any doubt dont hesitate to ask… even if you have to use your french i will be around to answer you back… quand même !!!.

La idea era hacer un estudio de sombras de para mi propio uso pero extrapolable al uso para inmoliliarias. El modelado es como siempre usando sketchup y el plugin gracias a Tomasz Janiak:

Como ejemplo elegí mi propia casa en una urbanización al sur este de Madrid, en Vicálvaro concretamente. Como veis, cuanto más mire al sur más posibilidades hay de que de el sol y por la misma regla de tres, una exposición norte conlleva menos horas de insolación (lo que no quiere decir que no haya sol, claro… y menos en Madrid). Aquí la urbanización a estudio.


La propia configuración de la urbanización va a permitir que sea más o menos complicado que entre el sol por tu ventana, lo que quiero decir es que no es lo mismo una casa cuadrada independiente de dos pisos que una concatenación de bloques puesto que entre ellos también van a generar sombra, incluso obviamente hay que contar sobre todo en medio de la ciudad con edificios cercanos que puedan proyecta sombra sobre el nuestro y por supuesto otros artefactos tipo antenas o postes así como árboles. En este caso concreto esto no se ha tenido en cuenta para simplificar el análisis.

Por otro lado estudiamos el número de horas que da la sombra con cierta orientación (aproximadamente 245º)


Y otra con aproximadamente 46º…


También incorporo el uso de plugin Solar Analysis de Mr Capeluto que se ha tratado en un post anterior, lo que ayudará a tener una idea más clara de por dónde va el sol… como veis el norte está indicado y muestra cómo sale por el Este y se pone por el Oeste… este es un tema interesante a comprender bien, echad un vistazo a esta web de Microsiervos, por cierto interesante siempre:

On va nous déménager alors… Analyse solaire !


Ma copine et moi on va nous déménager très bientôt alors il faut faire unE analyse solaire. Nantes, la ville ou on habite est connue dans le monde entier pour ses niveaux de pluie, n’importe que CE soit été, printemps… meme si France Météo a dit qu’il va faire BEAU… A Nantes ça ne marche pas comme ça. Il faut maximiser l’exposition pour garantir un montant minimum de lumière du soleil pendant l’année mais… comment faire?.

En rouge chez nous… on a pas encore trouvé notre nouvel appartement alors je vais faire l’analyse ici…


J’utilise Sketch-up pour modeler en 3D le bâtiment et Sun tools developé par Guedi Capeluto (Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning. Technion Israel Institute of Technology).

On peut voir quel parcour et a quel heure le soleil passe par là.  Chaque mois un peu plus haute (month 1, month 2, month 3…)


C’est très facile a comprendre et va beaucoup nous aider a trouver le trésor le plus important dans cette partie de la France: le SOLEIL !!!!!

Plug-in Features:

  • SunPATH: visualization (month and year)
  • SunPOS: Sun Position for a date and time
  • SunVIEW: Axonometric views from the Sun
  • SunPENETRATION: Analyze Sun Penetration/Access in any specific analysis point.

The SketchUp 3D API: Working with 3D geospatial data

GIS+Architectural scenaries. Awesome!


Even from scratch or from dgn/dxf vectorial format’s contour lines you create your own scenario.

Then import your model previously created using Sketch-up (this time i used google’s 3d warehouse, thank you Dilbert).

Stamp your house using sketch-up sandbox tools.

Then fur your scenario as if it was grass…

A little of photoshop like clouds and thats it!

Interesting: sketchup, more than a quick visualization tool.


I’ve extracted this information from the very interesting ‘Sketchup blog’ from Google… They talk about something I have always thought it could happen… Sketchup is not only a rapid visualization tool but a CAD like software with visuallization capabilities which in addition is integrated within a world wide used 3D scenary, perfect for Geovisualization and why not, GIS. Let’s  take a look at what they say…

Collard Maxwell Architects is a Sydney-based architecture firm with a philosophy that successful architecture is the synthesis of art, technology and building economics resulting in memorable, economic and sustainable building solutions.

Alberto Sunderland, a Project Leader for CM+A, says that initially SketchUp Pro was used as a quick visualization tool of early concept work.

The models were never very detailed and it was a tool used primarily within the office. It was used as a quick way of understanding massing and scale to determine if the design was heading the right direction.

As our skill grew we began to use SketchUp to generate models we could show our clients to help them understand the projects and to provide a quick and effective way of trying out changes before updating all our cad documentation.

Over a period of time we began to use SketchUp Pro for tender presentations. Although we originally took the images and “dumped them” into Photoshop to create the presentation posters, we eventually discovered the possibilities of the SketchUp Pro’s LayOut tool. Combining LayOut with our SketchUp work has made the creation of simple, effective and clear presentations much quicker than our previous method utilizing Photoshop. We are very impressed.

We anticipate that SketchUp will become the primary visualisation tool in this office and, together with LayOut, it will be used to create most, if not all our presentation slides. The speed and ease of use of the software is amazing, and we are coming to appreciate the importance it may have within our workflow.

Ever tried Google Earth 3D Building Maker?


I started modelling 3D buildings quite a few years ago, I used to use 3D StudioMAX… After almost forgetting everything i knew about modelling, 3D and so on Sketch up was released by Google. In a few days i was not just making demos but working and producing!!! Its extremly easy!!!!. Now They have just released something called “Google Earth 3D Building Maker” and its amazing, theres no need to know anything about modelling, you just have to insert polygons and move vertexes…very intuitive indeed!.

place the number of polygons you need…move their vertexes to the proper position.

Directly upload it to your Google 3D warehouse…

And finally take a look at it inside Google Earth… that’s it!.

You can always use Sketchup to perfect it… but it’s good enough…a piece of cake!

Some of the buildings located in Madrid and Cape Town are mine!

One more 3D building. Avenida de la Vega 28108. Restaurante Asiático SHENG. Madrid, Spain.


I used to have lunch every thrusday there, at the ‘Restaurante Asiático SHENG’. I strongly recommend you ‘entremeses’ (In China you will find them as ‘dim-sum’) and Cantonese duck or Hong Kong duck (this was slightly spicy thou).  Very good food, very fast service and pretty cheap menu: 10,7 €… ideal for an IT worker!.

(I have modified my kml using a extruded placemark we talked about a few posts ago).
